Please do not make the most skilled class in the game easier to play. A lot of us have worked very hard to master spells and want to continue this trend into the future. I have seen a lot of posts revolving around the idea that runemage is too hard to play; I disagree: runemage should be more difficult to play than every other class. It’s a slippery slope when mechanics are dumbed down for players that cannot be bothered to practice - anyone that played WoW in its early days remembers how magical and wondrous it was; I want this game to stay wondrous (and skill-reliant).
What an insulting, dismissive, and tone deaf sentence. There are many posts and discussions that raise legitimate feedback and issues about the Runemage mechanics. I have not personally seen one from people that are complaining because they just “can’t be bothered to practice.”
I agree with Czech, really enjoying a skill based game that rewards study.
It was not my intention to be rude; consider this a formal apology for the hyperbole that was utilized. I just feel that practice makes perfect and I find that many players think practicing for 10-20 hours on a handful of spells is sufficient. I really like the idea of some spells taking 30+ hours to fully master.
I completely agree. Many people have figured out how to cast the spells, and yes, it is hard. If people complain about the mechanics of runemage then they should play another class, or just rely on lower level spells. The higher level spells (frostbolt 3, pushback 2, affliction 2, and fireballl 3) are made to be hard to master, but be very rewarding when mastered. Even in movies and books, mages literally go to school to learn spells, and they have to practice for days to years to learn spells. The runemage in this game fits what it should be like, and this game would not be the same without the system.
I typically feel like slippery slope arguments are flawed so I don’t think that’s a good way to go about explaining it. I also don’t think there are any intentions to dumb down the classes. I feel like this goes without saying, but with VR games being so interactive it will likely always be more about skill.
The reason that WoW doesn’t feel wondrous anymore is because a large portion of the content has been explored and mastered. It doesn’t have anything to do with the game being ‘dumbed down.’ They have made things, broadly speaking, more accessible, and that’s why they are successful.
You make very simple arguments on how to solve/ prevent very complicated situations. But to address your concerns:
The game will stay skill based simply because it is VR.
It will lose the ability to stay wondrous eventually, but that is what happens as things become more familiar to us.
I wouldn’t say to make it harder, but I don’t think it needs to be much easier. I have a really easy time casting things like frost 3 and affliction 2, but I generally have a tough time getting ice lance to activate or fireball 2 until I ‘get into the groove’. The only spell I’d like to see be made easier is pushback 2. It’s by far the most difficult spell, and even the best mages don’t get it to activate consistently. But then again, I assume most people don’t practice it much/at all.
I totally agree with this.
When WoW came out, I never got into it. But I started playing fan-made legacy servers it a while back (before I got my VR ready PC) and it was amazing.
Exploration is one of the four main play styles. I believe that making runemage easier would only be useful to the Socializers. Making it harder would be nice for the Achievers.
Overall, I completely agree with not making it easier. But I also agree with not making it harder. Although, adding in some spells that are even more complex and difficult to master would be very cool.
Then again, I’ve been binge watching The Magicians on netflix.
Not to be off topic, but they’re killing it with season 3 so far (and I mean that in the best way!).
