Do not sell minor shards you will need them later in the game. Store them in the house chest.
Each day you get 5 random quests. I find critter capture is easy and quick to complete. When you talk to a quest giver you will see a green cross at the top corner of their window. Clicking on this gives you a random quest up to your level. Complete these if you can to get experience and level up.
If you are killed go back to the place you were killed if possible and collect your grave stone. This will reduce the cost of repairing your armour at the apprentice smith.
