I had an idea for making weapons feel like they have weight when i was trying to code vr games and thought this would be a great place to see it be used.
so as there isnt any real way to make the weapons have weight, i came up with a way to force players to swing slower with larger weapons.
for example lets say you have a dagger, the speed shouldnt be effected and the dagger should move as fast as you move lets call the speed of the dagger 0 as its not any different to your hand.
0 being the speed the controller moves.
allright now you have a one handed axe decent weight, lets say its speed is -5 to that of your controller
so you swing your axe, but the axe cant go as fast as your hand so it lags behind your hand
At first this will feel very strange as the weapon wont feel attached to your hand
but thats fine because if you swing really fast and create to much distance between the axe and your hand it loses power and does little to no damage.
so this will force players to learn the speed the weapon can travel and muscle memory will teach you the optimal speed to swing.
at first this mechanic will feel very od but i think that after 5 - 10 minutes of practicing the swing you will have learnt it.
eventually you will have it learnt so well that the weapon will feel as if its attached to your hand.
i would love to know what people think of this idea
if you hate it tell me why
if you love it tell me why
I don’t hate it, but I think I would just avoid slow weapons at all costs if they didn’t represent my motions with the controller. It would feel really frustrating.
fair enough i can see what you mean i just feel like theres no way or point to having big weapons if they do more damage but can still be swung like a knife it just seems so unrealistic to see a person swing a massive hammer around like a stick you know. like i can understand if your a dps class wanting fast attacks but if your a tank and one slow hit with an axe gains heaps of agro i feel like it would be alright .
Another way to accomplish this would be to have the speed affect the damage. I think right now with the sword, the longer your arcs the more damage it does or something. With a large weapon, you have the velocity negatively impact the damage. So it would still move with your hand as you flail about like crazy, but would do practically nothing. Where if you swung it slower, it would then be effective.
Or you could have combos that require timing as well as the normal sequence. Right now warriors speed through combos as fast as they can. But if you add a time element, that would require players to go through the combo slower.
Yeah true that does seem like a better idea because i do agree with achan on it being frustrating for it to not to be stuck to your hand, i really like that idea. this is also a good thing for prolonged gaming, if you your swinging your arms around as fast as possible that isnt going to do good things for your arms and your going to get tired really quickly
