Ranger Mechanics

The mechanics of the Ranger class feel very awkward and could be vastly improved in a number of ways.

  1. The Bow feels too small. When holding the bow in front of you and notching the arrow, the distance you have to pull the arrow back feels too short which makes for a very awkward shooting experience. The bow would greatly benefit from being larger and have a further draw back distance to help the experience of shooting arrows feel more natural.

  2. The sights of the bow are off. For me, in order to get the bow to be accurate, I have to hold the bow directly in front of my face which feels awkward and not how I would shoot a bow an arrow naturally in real life. Additionally, when holding the bow directly in front of your face to aim correctly, its hard to draw the bow back because you find yourself hitting the headset in an attempt to draw it fully. I have found the only way to make using the bow bearable is to hold it sideways.

  3. The arrow drop off when shooting. This is especially annoying when attempting to hit things from a far distance, but when notching the bow and shooting it has an arching shot that makes the flight path of the arrow feel very unnatural and hard to aim.

After spending so much time playing with the bow and arrow mechanics in “The Lab” - which feel incredible - this game’s bow mechanics feel very off. I love the entire idea of having the ranger as a class and I am a big fan of selecting special arrows, but actually using the bow leaves a lot to be desired.

As an IRL archer I haven’t had any trouble with Ranger tools in game. I don’t have to aim down the arrow to know where it’s going, I’ve found a VR anchor point that works well for me, and the arrow arc is easy to learn and predict. Draw length doesn’t really matter, because I can full draw IRL and even though the bow hits full draw well before I anchor, it’s not affecting my IRL stance. It’d be cool to have a draw length to match my 28.5" compound bow, but that’s a nit-picky detail. There’s no way they could have a bow that worked for everyone’s draw length unless it was an input for each user, but many people playing Orbus may have never touched a bow to know their measurement.

tl;dr the nuances of real archery don’t really have to apply to the mechanics of Orbus.

Nah, just play musketeer

Even if the string is pulled all the way back in the graphics, if you pull more your arrow will go further before dropping. The string limit is only helping to know when you do full damage.
