Spell failure feedback

Is it still on the roadmap to add in some additional feedback on why a spell failed? I saw a post from a couple years ago where the devs acknowledged that mages need more feedback on why a spell is failing and said it was on the roadmap to add something in to help address it.

The difficulty of casting isn’t the issue. It’s the not having any idea what you’re doing wrong that is the problem.

How would you suggest it be implemented? I’m trying to think of a way that would demonstrate what you did wrong, but if the game is just comparing the “picture” you draw to the “picture” of the correct spell and looking for a % similarity, I’m not sure how it would critique you.

I think the best feature for helping mages would be what was recommended a while back as “The Teacher’s Wand”; essentially, a wand that leaves a trail that everybody could see. That way you could compare spell drawings.

Perhaps a training mode where you select which spell you want to cast. Then it could color the sections of the drawing green/red/etc on a scale of how close it is to being accurate. That gives you an idea of what you’re doing wrong, and feedback as you get closer to doing it correctly.

I like that one

Also it’s doable. Perhaps for the Z axis, use an entirely different color range that is shown differently looking at the backside of the spell but not from the front. Or a XY/Z toggle button. Or some other indication to separate the Z axis from X and Y such as noticeable levels of brightness & darkness.

Similarly, a spell should “fail” if a different spell would have taken priority over it. For example: With fireball 2 selected for training a player manages to instead cast affliction 1, even though the drawing would have been an eligible as fireball 2 if affliction 1 did not exist, the cast should return as an affliction 1 to indicate to the player that they did not draw a valid fireball 2. However the colorized tension that gets displayed is only compared against fireball, ignoring all other spells. A cast might look nearly perfect for a fireball 2, but is a more-perfect affliction 1. Players can work the rest on their own.
