The hammer size DOES extend your attack range, and you can only hit with the mallet portion. At giant+4 you hit so far that monsters immediately leash.

Drink a giant potion, throw your hammer, enter combat (dispelling giant potion effect). Hammer returns, still yuge. Repeat.
