New Player Help Day 1/19/18

We can have us higher level players escort the low level ones to the witch’s cave and back so they can get their wands without being ROFLstomped by the crabs on the way. =)

keep a constant portal to green lady forest up, have a player pointing them down the stairs, another pointing toward cave and clearing crabs, ah and supply em with ruined potions redflutes and ears.

I haven’t been on since launch. I was playing before on a hybrid alienware laptop but unfortunately the sound quality and jitters were pissing me off. I had a computer built and it arrived last night. So I will try to make it, if anything to just get the low down on a lot of the changes.

Sounds great man. See you there.

For those who can’t attend because of not having access to VR, I’ll be livestreaming the event here on my friend’s twitch channel if you would like to watch:

Note to the devs: If this is considered advertising, feel free to take this down or PM me to do so.

Thanks to everyone for attending the event, it was a blast, even with the troll and with the sharding. Speaking of, @Riley_D, how should I go about reporting a user named Aeon? @Damander, @Sparky, and others can attest to him “trolling” and acting like he was hilarious by teleporting different people to different zones (including putting a portal infront of the player house door to the desert…).

That was fun! Wish I could have been more help to the mages, but I think I managed to mime enough to help one or two players out!

The end-game mages who were able to take the time to explain everything did a damn fine job, so kudos to them!

Hi, I’ll send you a PM about this.

Cool to see so many people on otherwise, looked very friendly! I d/ced during the simon says game :frowning:

I’m here, no need to report me. I’ll vouch that I 100% made two portals, I’ve got my stream footage to back that up if you would like to see it. I hardly consider that a big deal, it happens all the time in this game.

If portals in town are considered a form of griefing or trolling, then why are they allowed in game? If it’s a problem, why isn’t it dealt with at it’s source? Every day I play for about 4-6 hours and every day, without fail, I’ll see at least one person asking for help because they either took a portal not knowing where it was going or (less likely) had one spawned on them. If you want to bring attention to a problem, there isn’t a better way to do it than when a group of people are trying to figure out how they can talk over each other. Speaking of, I would like to report every single person who was in town for this event, as they broke my immersion in the game.

The simple answer is that we haven’t had the time to implement countermeasures yet. Back in beta, the community was smaller and we issued messages asking them not to troll people with teleports, but as the community grew larger this knowledge got lost.

I’d ask you not to do this again and I encourage anyone to report someone doing this repeatedly, to which we warn until the time comes that we can prevent it from happening.

Now I don’t want this thread derailed talking about this incident, so please carry on talking about the event.

Fair enough, thank you for the answer. That’s reasonable.

I did not spend a ton of time in this event, it’s just not my thing, but one thing I will mention: if you are new and want to learn runemage, don’t be afraid to ask for help. You don’t need a special day to seek guidance. Generally speaking, it’s going to be easier to learn something if there isn’t 40 people talking in an area. It’s hard to show and tell someone what they are doing wrong if there are various spells going off all over the place and it’s hard to hear each other. I have sought help several times, and there is always someone willing to help, especially if you have a specific thing you are interested in learning. The main thing is just practicing, even when it seems like you’re not hitting any spells. If you need help and see me in game, hit me up. I’ll teach you how to cast portals first  lol

For each class, we split off into groups.

Those groups then went to different areas to become smaller.

For runemages at least, we split up 3-4 people per 1 “high level” runemage. I myself taught 4 different runemages many spells, and we went to a few spell pillars to get them in their books.

Some people in game, believe it or not, are too shy to run up to someone and ask for help. Having an event like this is a great formal way to “invite” them to ask for help. I’d say people learned stuff just fine. What you showed up for was the group games.

We were already having enough problems with server sharding before you decided it’d be “hilarious” to teleport people into different zones. And then you went on to defend yourself by saying “games like this don’t get fixed unless you break something”. We don’t need people like you in our community.

Thanks for your help with the mage starting quest!

I would suggest, for future events, that you announce before-hand some different locations OUTSIDE of the main city for learning different classes. As someone walking in to this with only some knowledge from Marchex (who popped into my stream for a bit to let me know about it) about what was even going on, it was a bit messy. Having these different sessions be in areas surrounding the main city, but outside the walls, would be a lot better for a couple reasons:

1: It’s easier to instance into an area if there are less people in it and you can just run back and forth between the loading zone to re-instance.
2: For people who are just trying to quest, it’s not a distraction. I play a lot, but many people only have a few hours a week to play and may choose not to be forced into a situation that is going to take them out of their personal escape. There are quest givers and quests in Highsteppe that people may just be trying to absorb and enjoy.
3: It’s easier to get the attention of a few people than a large group. Pretty beneficial for actually teaching something.

I would have been happy to help teach Warrior, Runemage or Musketeer, but it was just too much going on in there.

We quickly realized that the server couldn’t handle that many people, and that it was hard to hear over everyone. This was a learning experience. The last time there was a “big event” like this, there weren’t as many people playing Orbus.

The biggest problem we had was sharding, with no easy way to switch between them. We still wanted the large “group” games led by @Damander, so we had everyone attempt to regroup in Highsteppe. With how the servers and games are right now, next time I’m apart of an event like this I will most likely try to organize it as you suggested, with multiple smaller groups in different locations. Perhaps even we’ll have an RSVP system as-to prevent bigger shards. We had about 3 shards going (with you creating the third). With no easy way to swap shards, it quickly became hard to manage and keep organized. Even if we had done smaller groups, sharding would have presented a pretty big problem.

The teaching part went just fine. As I said, you ran into us doing the “group games”

Either way, thank you for the suggestions, maybe you can help next time.

Thank you everyone who attended today. It was a blast and im glad everyone seemed to have a good time!

I want to give some big shout outs to the following people for helping with donations:

Matthew,LT Shield,X,asterisk,snoopy

We were very surprised by the turn out and the amount of lag that it caused. I do apologize for that.

I will say that this event was about the community and it was not meant in any way to inconvenience anyone’s game play experience.

Gathering at one location was the best way to get the community all together and get to know each other and I would say that’s exactly what happened.

Most everyone says that they really enjoyed the event and I will do it again in the future.

Makes sense, it was just a bit jarring coming in at that point in time (which, for my time zone anyways, is when many would be getting on to play). Maybe one thing we could do is have multiple people doing the group games for each individual class they were working with. That might also be a way to “reward” people for coming out and participating in the teaching/learning of stuff as well. As you said, many more people are playing now, so it is definitely viable to take that approach.

I just wanted to thank @Damander for leading the event and @Sparky for the awesome training. @Sparky was kind enough to give training for one musketeer which was greatly appreciated.

honestly glad I could help we were meant to have a few but they got sharded and didn’t know how the sharding worked and I only found out after the event. even from my ingame event experience this was ambitious but went of very well despite some mess ups along the way. it was unfortunate that my other guild members couldn’t show up to help but I’m happy that I could make it to the event to help out. there will be more events soon for every one The Well of Urd has some in the works at the moment. and from the result of this one and the last events it should be great.
