Orbus's Graphics

Hello Devs, Founders, and Players. Lets face it, by 2023 we will have super realistic graphics. Like… really realistic looking graphics. Graphics that will look like real life, maybe we will even be tricked into thinking we’re looking at real life things in some of our future games. But when I look at… THIS (see image below)

I mean… the tree aint bad.
Im feeling like… VR Roblox. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hating on your game but the graphics are just so low bit. Look at that wolf. (see image above) I don’t even know if its a wolf… I really wish that whatever it is looked at least a LITTLE bit more real. When I play a game (especially a VR game) I don’t want to feel like I’m fighting a wolf that’s in the game. I want to feel like I’m fighting a real wolf, and these graphics make me feel like I’m swinging at something that isn’t alive. I guess my suggestion is that I want better graphics. As lame as that sounds, its necessary. Just look at the character creation…SillySparseHadrosaurus-mobile%5B1%5D

  1. No Legs.
  2. The only thing that looks real is the hands and the neck.

I mean atleast tell me your leaning towards better graphics especially for the characters.
I love your game (RPGMMO wise), what I don’t love is your graphics. I just hope you can improve on it. Please leave your comments below as I would love to hear your opinions.
Thank you for reading. - Link

Have you been in the loop at all on the entire game overhaul that’s in progress? They’re literally hand-crafting an entirely new set of assets with a newer graphics engine. Should alleviate a lot of your concerns. Keep in mind this is also a first-of-its-kind game with a small development team.

I know about Orbus: Reborn. Even the graphics shown there are quite unrealistic. (unrealistic is totally fine if that’s what you guys are going for)

I’m just saying that your points above are directly addressed by what’s already been released with Reborn. I just don’t think its realistic to expect a small independent dev team to produce a first-of-its-kind game with hyper-realistic graphics that A-list studios are still working on. If we’re talking about 5 years in the future, I’d ask you to consider what we had 5 years in the past.

Quite literally a huge point of reborn, a full graphics overhaul.

We’ve already been told to expect overhauled char creation. There’s some screenshots floating around that are way better

You are totally right about that and its actually really good for their first VR MMORPG game. Still the graphics in Reborn are a little low quality for 2019. I can get a Minecraft Texture pack that looks better. If the graphics problem is because of the independent dev team then I suggest them partnering with someone. Maybe they don’t want a partner and if that’s the case then im sure they can make a really good looking game in 5 years.

I honestly don’t like nor do I want real graphics. I enjoy the cartoonist look. I would wait until you see what unborn looks like before you pass judgement. Who know what it will look or feel like on ultra setting.

Whether you like real or cartoonist graphics is completely up to you. A lot of the players were driven here because of SAO and seeing the first VR MMORPG makes all the SAO fans eager to play. The game has also had many inspiration from SAO (one is the menu where you can point and swipe to open it) I really don’t want to bring any other games or Shows into this because we are talking about Orbus Not SAO. (but im sure most people that love SAO don’t want cartoonist graphics)

I also don’t enjoy realistic graphics in games. The cartoony look always looks way better imo. I don’t need a headset to see the real world.

Also, a triple A studio hasn’t put out a graphically awesome game with more than a few hours of solo player content so I always think it’s hilarious when people bitch about Orbus graphics.

You know what breaks more immersion than low-poly graphics?

Playing the game at 10 FPS with realistic graphics.

Honestly, the graphics are decent enough that I can get past it due to the awesome interaction and gameplay. I am holding off on all judgements on graphics until reborn comes out. But I have to agree with the previous comments made; this is a small team and not some massive AAA studio. The fact that they are paving the way for this VR MMORPG genre, speaks volumes towards their love/passion for helping further the VR cause

By 2040 I assume most computers will have quantum processors. If you have a VR compatible PC that can run a game over 60 FPS im sure that you can play that game with really good graphics.

SAO was literally a cartoon.

(Also, most of the people currently playing Orbus are SAO fans, so this seems to be an opinion your are presenting as the consensus view without evidence.)

More relevantly, one of the most important things for a VRMMORPG to achieve is high framerate, even when a ton of players are on screen. Unlike a traditional MMO where 200 people jumping around in town can tank the framerate down to single digits without it being the end of the world, that just doesn’t work in VR. I believe the direction orbus has been pursuing is pretty solid, in that they are going for a cell-shaded painterly stylized look to keep polygon overhead down and performance up. Look at games like Grim Fandango, which leveraged the limitations of the 3d hardware at the time to achieve a truly memorable look to top off an amazing game. WoW did something similar with their cartoony stylized look, and at this point while their graphics are extremely dated, the style keeps it playable for most players.

All of that being said, I take your point, as do the devs who during a recent interview admitted that they didn’t expect graphics to be as much of an issue with potential players as it ended up being. Looking at alpha/beta visuals in Orbus, next to the reworked they’ve already done, next to what they are looking to do with Reborn is pretty impressive, especially with ongoing performance gains associated with it.

Addendum: Please fight the urge to dismiss the responses here to be mindless fanboyism, as that is typically the response when someone comes into the community and says the devs are doing it wrong. The situation is that many of us have been along for the ride (almost 2 years now for some) and there are some very good reasons the devs have done what they’ve done and made the game the way that it is. It may be worth giving it a chance to grow on you.

I was talking about SAO’s idea of VR, not the literal show. SAOs graphics were said to be almost like real life and I don’t expect real life graphics at all from anyone at this time, but all I’m saying is that 2019’s rework seems a little too cartoony. The fact that you started to bring up the FPS issue kind of changed my mind about the fundamentals of the graphics in this game. Its gonna be a pain to run real life graphics but im not talking about realistic graphics by 2019 or 2020, i’m talking about by at least 2025.

Oh yeah, it’s hard to imagine what things are going to be like in 7 years… from the headsets to the controllers to the graphics, etc. I mean, VR has only been kinda mainstream for a year or two at this point. I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.

Well it’s 2018/2019 and this is what they are settling with?

When it’s 2025 they can think about changing the graphics again (Which is hard) or another game can come out to suit your fix.

Well put, dude. I concur with every statement you make in this

Wouldn’t you guys rather start gradually making the graphics better instead of just waiting until a designated time?

How would you propose they do that?

Mix and match realistic mobs with a cartoon environment?
Every year go through the thousands of assets and make them look more realistic?

I mean, they are making them better… this is the second revamp they are doing (and much bigger than the first one). I don’t know that realistic = better, so that becomes a preference thing.

I think one of the big reasons these discussions come up so often with Orbus is because with pancake games, you have so many options now for MMOs. You want it fantasy or sci-fi? You want it with a scaled world or concrete levels? You want it with this type of loot system or that type of loot system? With Orbus, since it’s literally the only one in existence, everyone wants it to meet their preferences and it’s just not possible. I think another that will occur over the next several years, will be a lot more options for this type of experience so players can gravitate to what they enjoy the most.

i dont know about your computer… but with vr, my beast of a PC from a year ago cant go above lowest graphics settings on this game anyway. Sure , it would be NICE to have upgraded graphics on a year by year basis, but THAT is totally unrealistic. Not to mention the fact that generally speaking, you want a game to work on as many computers as possible, so they would have to make the game huge and have a different art set each year added in? sounds unfeasable.
