I think you should have a specific team within the Devs that focus on just graphics and have the others do different work on the game. if you do that then the “Graphics team” can just make the assets better every month or so. I would think it would be more proficient. (again sorry if I confused you “asset” wise as I don’t really know all of the words that devs use)
By the time they get hyper-realistic graphics, people will already have super intelligent computers.
by the time everyone has super intelligent computers, there will be a game out with crysis level graphics and ppl will just play that. This is great for being the first VR MMO, but it wont be the last.
You are aware these screenshots you uploaded are from many months ago correct? They have made a few improvements since then making it a tad better, and all of that aside we will have Reborn coming out Q1 2019, which will look so much better… Maybe not the impossible you’re asking for from a VR game made on Unity, and not a VR port from a AAA game such as Fallout 4 VR or DOOM VFR, etc… I think many of us don’t want ultra-realistic graphics because what we have is enough to keep us in the game and playing for several hours a day. These graphics definitely grow on you man, I know it has for me lmao.
Question, do u own the game? Seriously, because the reason I ask is because the second screenshot is outdated and from before a major graphics overhaul, and the “wolf” in the first picture isn’t actually a wolf, it’s a manticore, as it’s named in game and wolves have a completely different model
Link,
I’ll try not to make this personal (kinda ironic cuz I addressed this to you… heh), because I don’t have anything against you as a person, but rather the approach in which this thread was created (from my perspective). I understand the appeal of both ultra-realistic graphics and artsy graphics, I really do. However, when someone (as it appears to me) just barges into a community and practically demands that the devs start working on changing the graphics without…
- Initially asking if this was the intended artstyle prior to creating the post (which it is)
- Realizing that everyone has a preference and that nobody has any priority over anyone else outside of the dev team
- Doing a little research into what might be outdated content, current dev team/size/capabilities, current hardware capabilities, game roadmap, etc.
it kinda puts me on edge. That being said, I easily could have just misinterpreted the tone of the body of the post, so with that out of the way, here are my thoughts.
Be that as it may, that just means we have 5 years to see an optimized game released with super realistic graphics. This just happens to not be that game specifically.
This, again, is just a preference. One person’s opinion doesn’t always determine the outcome of a situation, and it also doesn’t qualify as a necessity. I understand the appeal, as stated earlier, but other people have differing opinions that should be taken into account before calling something a necessity.
This comment is hard for me to digest, honestly. Simply because something is compatible doesn’t mean that it will run well, especially in the context of good graphics or vr, and even more so when the two are combined. There are huge processing costs, as I am sure you are aware of, that current hardware is being tailored to. Similarly, if most computers end up having quantum processors by 2040, then hopefully by 2040 there will be other, super realistic VRMMO’s that people can play alongside other mmos that have their own style or flair to make them unique.
Community, correct me if I’m wrong, but I would assume that most people prefer “crisp” (?) or clear graphics despite the artstyle (realistic or cartoony), and that is what a lot of us see happening in the upcoming rework. As others have stated, give it some time to grow on you, and you might learn to look past it and simply see the beauty in the current artstyle.
All I can say is… $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$… I don’t think the team has that kind of dinero at the moment Well… maybe after a month or two with the in-game shop
That being said, through all the alpha/beta tests, and now early access release, the graphics have been genuinely improved (in the context of “crisp”-ness) at different points in time, and the next rework is another step in that direction while also sticking to their envisioned style. It was stated, in fact, that the vast majority of the dev team members are currently working as artists in the latest in-game interview that happened about a week ago. The hard part from a developing standpoint with this comment would be the fact that the graphics team would also need to communicate and develop with the programmers and level designers to either get the sizing right, animation timings accurate, etc. It would be extremely difficult to have this “graphics team” work independently from the rest of the crew while trying to work on the same project.
All in all, there is a lot to think about in this thread, both good and bad, despite what some comments may portray(including my own). I think that there could have, and should have, been a little more research done prior to this thread being created to help with it’s productivity and/or how people perceived the goal of the OP. I am glad, however, that most people in this thread came into this conversation with an open mind.
Again, apologies if this came off as personal, it wasn’t my intent.
The textures look low res. Are you on the higher graphics option? I know the textures look better than that.
Besides, the game isn’t advertised, or would be, for the graphics. The game is FUN and very social, and is the first vr mmorpg. Been a really long time where in an mmo I can randomly talk to a person just because.
Immersion > graphics.
Game play > graphics.
I was around for the dark ages of gaming. the ps1 era when graphics suddenly took the fore front and we had hundreds of shovel ware. Good looking shit games. Since, I have always considered graphics the least important thing. Because they are. If it’s a good game, it’s a good game. Honestly they are a little rough at first glance, but 5 minutes in the world and it doesn’t matter what they look like. They could be worse and I’d still enjoy it just as much. Graphics do one thing and one thing only. They sell the game. And people who only care about graphics will only play a short period anyway.
Currently we have 3 full time 3D artists working on Reborn along with a part time 2D artist. We are excited to be able to start revealing some of the work we have been doing behind the scenes to make OrbusVR: Reborn look even better, and while I can appreciate your stance on the realistic graphics, that’s not the direction we are wanting to take the graphics.
One thing I would also like to point out for anyone reading this post that hasn’t played the game yet either, the screen shots in the original post are rather old. The first screen shot was before we went to textured environment (you can still see the low poly on the mountains in the background) so probably 3-4 months ago if not more, I uploaded trying to recreate the original below. The second screen shot was even farther back then that (I’m guessing sometime before we entered into EA in December of 2017) as the player models are low poly (all the hard edges along the head), I’ve included a GIF of the character creation from the upcoming Reborn below (still in development). I’ve also attached a screenshot from the upcoming reborn environment for those that might not of seen it, you can also keep up with the development here: OrbusVR: Reborn :: Fantasy virtual reality MMO for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift + Touch
I really like the trees with the upturned leaves. They look fuller/bigger without dropping low, blocking the player’s vision or causing collision issues like the original trees (which I think is one reason you had switched to the super tall sphere/dr. Suisse trees?)
This is a low priority if you ask me.
I would much prefer them take any time that would be invested into this and put it into new class skills and mechanics.
I’m trying to imagine when a perfectly realistic (graphics+animation of course) human-sized spider would start to climb onto me, biting me, and doing i dont know what in a dark dungeon as a low level enemy.
…
…
And I’m madly slashing at it into the AIR with my sword because I have to hit the hitbox and not the enemy model of course.
…
…
No. And I have multiple reasons.
I’m dead
Alright, Quinn’s down. Graveyard guys.
I know that you guys are working on Orbus:Reborn (which will help my concern) and you have a small, Independent Dev Team so I know there is only so much you can do. Again, im not saying any of you are doing anything wrong, im just giving you a suggestion. (also sorry for not responding sooner, I fell asleep so i’ll get back to all of you soon.)
Graphics draw a lot of attention to the game (not including roblox and Minecraft because they were really old) If you look for games you’re gonna see a variety of them. most people will be drawn to the game with the best looking graphics. Yes, I agree, gamers that know what they are doing would look for the gameplay side, storyline, pvp, pve, and everything like that and not just the graphics, but this game is already REALLY good, but if the graphics looked more realistic, I think it would sell a lot more because there are a lot of gamers that don’t know what they are doing when it comes to buying a game. Don’t get me wrong, there are those that do know about buying a good game.
I think I’ll refer back to Aelar here. I don’t disagree that some new people would probably be drawn to the game if the graphics were overhauled past what’s intended for reborn, but I think the opinion that graphics should be upgraded at great cost just for the sake of getting more people involved is not one a lot of people share right now. Also, catering to people who don’t know what they want is a pretty strange way to market a unique game.
It’s fine to hold that opinion, but it would be good if we all realized that there are a lot of differing opinions about what would make this game good and the developers have decided the current art style is what they want despite capabilities to do otherwise. At present a major graphics upgrade would simultaneously exclude people by forcing higher hardware requirements and reduce the time the developers can spend on creating new good content, new content being something every current player desires in some capacity.
In addition to this: The Reborn artstyle is carefully crafted so they can release Orbus on psvr to cater to an even larger audience. Improving/changing the graphics to be more realistic would limit the audience by a wide enough margin that the people that would join based on graphics alone would be minute comparatively.
That kinda comes down to skill. Personally, if there was a human-sized spider that was perfectly realistic and it jumped on me… trying to bite me… man I would love to fight that thing. I wouldn’t be madly slashing it into the air… I would be combo-ing and blocking. Not too sure what you meant about the hitbox… the hitbox should be where the enemy is… right?
That kind of situation would be more like a horror game i think. For me it is definitely not what i would like to do for hours every evening. I know people can get used to many situations, maybe even to something extremely impossible thing like a bunch of human-sized spider jumping on them but I (and noone has to agree with me) would not like it.
I don’t have arachnophobia or anything like that. What i wanted to point out with my exaggerated example is just the difference in the feeling while looking at monsters from far above them like in a traditional dungeon crawler or hack&slash and looking at them from weapon distance when they are made “real”.
Btw if you would like to try a VR game with real good graphics try Hellblade:Senua’s Sacrifice VR Edition. That game has a really well made gameplay, graphics and animation.
About the more technical things:
If the enemy is made totally “real” when the hitbox is perfectly matching the model that combo-ing part you mentioned would be impossible. You could hit the legs, torso, anything but since you wanted it to be “like real life” those hits should be counted as separate damages with different effects on the enemy. How would it be a combo? You can always say “torso-left leg-torso” is a combo and you get some extra damage from performing it but where is the reality in that? In the end you would just swing as hard and fast in the air as you can because that would give you the best damage numbers. All this in the name of realism. (Damage numbers in real life? HP bar in real life?)
So in my opinion it is much better as it is now. Forget the complete realism and let’s find the point where it is enjoyable because you can feel like a hero with your combos and spells and downing big enemies and have an environment where you like to be. We can argue where that point is and it is probably different for everyone but in the end this should be a game, not real life.
