I originally edited my first sunset announcement post, but in case you missed it I copy/pasted it below for more visibility:
We have received many questions about the future of OrbusVR in the past week. This was a very tough decision from the start, however I just wanted to confirm that the servers will not be online past April 6th, 2025. We greatly appreciate everyone that has contacted us and offered support. We want to encourage everyone to support the next generation of VRMMO’s along their journey like you always supported us through ours.
We’ve also received questions about open sourcing the game. There are several legal considerations we must work through to figure out if that is even possible or not. We are starting that process internally, and will update you all when we know more. Please keep in mind this will be a lengthy process.
With that being said we are hoping to release a few select 3d models (made by us in-house) to the community for recreational purposes like 3d prints (dragons, weapons). This is not set in stone yet, but we hope to have more information soon.
We have had a great run of over 8 years with the game, building the best VR community alongside the first VRMMO. While it deeply saddens us to see such a large part of our lives come to an end, we couldn’t be happier with what we have accomplished. We are so proud of the people we worked with, the players we have met, and the memories from working on and playing this game. If you are a player currently playing, or returning after a break, please come help us celebrate with the farewell events coming up.
Wow, I’ve only just now learned that the game is shutting down. I’ve always had a soft place for this game and how close it was to me, I’ve met countless people on this game and have so many core memories of pure bliss and joy. From humble beginnings and doing dungeons basically breaking every shard I was apart of to running sub 10 minute 15’s this game really had everything I wanted. I was always so excited to hop on and see everybody each morning and just talk to new or known friends, it felt like everyday I’d meet someone new that had a story to tell and I always enjoyed listening. On Orbus you could meet anyone, from a normal highschooler (like myself when starting) to older folks talking about old game in highsteppe, there was literally everything. I could not describe the games community in one word because of just how vastly different everyone was but that’s apart of the beauty of it, the game was just small enough to where you couldn’t really avoid anyone and so I met what felt like everyone. I want to thank everyone for the enjoyment because without each and every one of you that game would’ve been different and looking back I don’t think I’d have it be any other way. Sorry for the jumbled mess, didn’t want to spend too much time on it but again thank you everyone for being you and for letting me be me.
This game really had something special about it that nothing else seems to even come close to replicating. Easily the finest VR game I’ve played with how many hours I sunk. This was a core experience for me and seeing both the rise and fall of the game over the past years has been a wild ride. This whole game had so much passion and love poured into it from the devs and the community that will leave a void in my heart once it’s gone.
I hope that whatever the former Orbus devs move onto that they put as much dedication in as they did this game, it really showed.
