True affliction mage alternative single target

I don’t fully understand the mechanic created for true affliction. Why was the solution to reducing True Affliction making the normal spells do less damage? And then to fix that problem for single targets the Arcane Ray was added to increase damage depending on the amount of DoTs.

Why was it not made that a normal spell would still do the same damage but the DoT on the main target would be either nothing or very weak. And the follow up spread on the surrounding targets would be full power? Because the new method gives problems for True Affliction mages in dungeons and they are also losing tileset power now because of this long arcane ray spell. :man_shrugging:
