February Pre-Alpha Test Feedback Thread

Actually only when I try to record with Shadowplay but works now, sometimes it hangs on Unity NOW and I have to close and re open the client only happens sometimes though not very often.

My stand out thoughts so far:

-Itā€™s damn awesome. You guys have done a great job.

  • I spent basically my whole time as the warrior class. And while it was enjoyable at first, it quickly started to become tedious.
ā€“ Warrior starts strong, finishes lousy, During the first couple levels the difficulty of killing mobs felt just right. I could stun, block, and deal enough damage at a fine pace. It was still obvious watching the other classes around me the warrior doesnt do nearly as much damage, but that makes sense considering warriors the tank class, and I didnt have to worry too much because the starting zone is one big mob killing everything that moves together. But latter on when I was exploring by myself it became nearly impossible to kill ANYTHING. Even lower level mobs were a hassle. The fun quickly began to drain when I realized I couldnt really do anything without a ranger to provide damage or a musketeer to heal and deeps. Even with big, timed, strong slashes I just couldnt do enough damage. I know balancing a melee class in this situation will be crazy hard, just throwing my thoughts on the current class build out there. Again mind you I wasnt spamming little wiggles, these were full on arcing swings. Tanks should be able to kill mobs no prob, but know their place and be dungeon boss sponges. (Playing on Rift, dont know why that would make any difference but just so you know)
  • Attacking a stray sheep surprised the f**k out of me (you know what I mean, it was terrifying)
  • A quest progress tracker would be nice. Im sure it coming but sorely missed it.
  • First boss in the dungeon was definitely bugging out. It got down to about 2/3 health and then its bar would drop to 0 and become invincible. Happened twice.
  • I wish i could keep playing and level the other classes to max but Iā€™ve been awake for 28 hours and my sword arm is sore and damn if my bed doesnt look fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnneeee.
  • im having a hard time remembering anything else right now, but if i do Iā€™ll add it i guess.

peace, see everyone next time.

Thanks for the feedback! You currently have the record for most time played during the test, btw!

And definitely the balancing of the mobs vs players is something weā€™ll be taking a very long look at before the next test. We were afraid it was going to be too easy but it turned out to be way too hard haha.

Did you have any thoughts re: the reach of the sword since you played it so much? Was it hard getting close enough to attack stuff? Or do we need to make the sword longer or something?

Now that you mention the sword length I did have trouble with it a couple times. When mobs would run to me from a distance and then stop to attack, they didnt come close enough for me to reach them with the sword even though they were melee as well. I had to take a moment to line up the teleport and jump right to the edge of them so I could actually hit them. Hitting the big bosses was awkward too, for much of the same reason, while I had them aggroed theyā€™d attack from a distance too far for the sword to reach as apposed to getting close.

If you remember the guy that always got a white window when he started the game (me ^^). I found a solution for me to actually play this game. I went into this directory: ā€¦\OrbusVRClient-0.88\resources\app\client and started ā€œvrclientā€ - Then I got into the game with the client name: test . I could lvl, progress and my stats were saved. Funny thing, I was already lvl 4 when I started

The ranger damage needs throttling. Machine gun spam of arrows is an over-powered form of DPS, but my arm canā€™t handle any more!

So true i dps so much, itā€™s like having an uzi ^^

I only DPSā€™d good as a ranger once I was higher level (7-8). Before that, I could rapid-fire till my arms were rubber and I was only ā€œshavingā€ off mob health.

This is your 15 minute warning!

Great playtest! Overall, the general experience of it was amazing. Hereā€™s some of the things to consider for the future releases.

  • How to loot was not intuitive. It was by random logic that I figured out how to place it in my bag. But after that it made really good sense =)
  • Arrows being blocked by playersā€¦ yeah. Nothingā€™s worse than priming a power shot and having someone jump in front of you. Then you have to (in the hectic of combat) try to figure out if you can move without losing your power shot arrow.
  • Locomotion has several issues. The feeling of trackpad movement felt good to me although movement in the world felt somewhat SLOoooOW. The mixed state of operation (being able to trackpad and teleport) felt messy somehow. The mixed mode served its purpose in combat but I think I wouldā€™ve preferred trackpad motion with a ā€œjump/sidestepā€ ability (vs showing the growing grid of motion options).
  • I wasnā€™t able to see my new gear on my character in the character window. It showed icons in the slots, but I couldnā€™t see it on the avatar.
  • My experience bar got stuck just a smidge before L8. It said ā€œLevel 8ā€ above the bar, but it never rolled over.
  • The air shipā€¦ very cool. But when I was on the airship my framerate dropped or I was programmatically ā€œskippingā€. I donā€™t think itā€™s framerate though because Iā€™m running a 1080 Titan X and Iā€™d be baffled to think these graphics brought down that badboy. Itā€™s almost like the airship ride was doing something special with rendering or what not.
  • Holding the magic wand -> Logout -> Login -> move -> look back = magic wand floating over there.

Good stuff

  • After awhile playing the Archer, I was able to really get into the playstyle and mix my power shots with my magic shots while drawing aggro and sidesteppingā€¦ and on. It felt dynamic. With a little polish, that class will be a sure winner.
  • The world - dudesā€¦ I really liked it. Stepping into VR for the first time was amazing. But stepping into this world with the MMO aspect really made me feel that VR awesomeness again.
  • Style - I like the low-poly style youā€™ve done with the game. It works really well for the character gear too.

Thanks for the feedback! Just to pick out a few points quickly:

If it said ā€œLevel 8ā€ you were Level 8, thatā€™s the max level right now which is why the bar does that ā€œstuckā€ thing.

Not sure whatā€™s going on with the airship other than you can see a ton more from way up there. Iā€™ll have to look into it. I also have a Titan X in one of my test rigs and havenā€™t noticed that issue before.

If you didnā€™t see the stuff appear on your avatar, it was probably that you were equipping gear for the wrong class. It will let you put it in the equipment slot as long as the slot type matches (e.g. a shirt into a shirt slot), but if the gear is for the Ranger and you are Runemage you just donā€™t see it on yourself and you donā€™t get the effects. I need to make that more obviously by making it show up red or something.

Thanks for the kind words re: the world and the gameplay!

Thatā€™s it, weā€™re calling it a night!

Thanks to everyone who played! Let us know your thoughts as you get a chance to consider them

This was far more fun and absorbing than Iā€™d expected - thanks for the chance to play! I maged the whole day and I enjoyed it. I became obsessed with casting a portal spell, which was impossible until I did it. Then I became obsessed with finding more pillars. (I found 3 but could only get 2 of the portal spells to work; if you tell me that all 3 work right now Iā€™ll be crushed.) So I sworded to as many areas as I could in search of more pillars. There were places I wanted to search for pillars but couldnā€™t on my own, so I recruited people. This is exactly the kind of gameplay that MMOs promise but hardly ever deliver: challenge, mystery, and a real reason to group and explore.

My fear is that a lot of this awesomeness is, ironically, at least partially a product of the pre-alpha state of the game. That the rune tracing was finicky, that the rules of it were kind of muddy, that you had to find these things in the world and remember them in your head ā€“ that made it hard to do and therefore rewarding. If this all gets smoothed out and simplified for launch, well, I think weā€™ll have lost something very cool. (If possible, Iā€™d love to see you randomize the symbols associated with spells on a per user basis, so it will never be possible to just look up a spell on the internet.) And the exploring, too, was great and special because I was going places you couldnā€™t reach by normal locomotion. Okay, the fort will be cooler once itā€™s populated and interactive ā€“ but there was some serious payoff in figuring out how to sword my over there (and shout out to the guy who snuck up behind me while I was staring off into the rolling green canyon at the edge of the world and gave me a heart attack.) How you retain the thrill of this kind of exploration in the finished game, I donā€™t know ā€“ but I hope you figure out something.

TL;DR: I was a skeptic, am now converted, and I hope you find clever ways to maintain the challenge and mystery as the game becomes more polished and eventually goes live.

iā€™ll wait the alpha test =)

One of my main hopes is that we can maintain that mystery as well.

And yes in theory all 3 runes work now, but who knows, it might be that the system just needs polish!

There were no runes in the second zone yet, so I hope you didnā€™t waste too much time looking.

But yeah, Iā€™m not sure how in the age of sites like Wowhead you can keep that mystery. Some of it will work in our favor because this community is bound to be pretty small. So letā€™s just all agree not to spoil it for everyone else?!

I think you played like the whole time! Haha. Did you get a chance to do everything?

This was by far the best test ever! i had so much fun grouping up with people i met, then playing with them for awhile, then losing them because they disconnected and got reconnected in a different shard. There was so much more to do this time! I spent a lot of time just exploring the new areas, killing mobs, and escorting lower leveled players to the higher leveled zones. One of my favorite parts was the dungeon, which we didnā€™t make it through unfortunately, but it was still a lot of fun. Also in case anyone i played with sees this, i was ā€œCount Bleckā€. I cant wait to see what the fort at the end of the southern path is going to turn out to be, or the port town at the dungeon. I will definitively donate to the kickstarter, even if i donā€™t get early access from it. I cannot wait for the full game to come out!+

Also in the middle of the test, there was this giant shoot out near the second town, because the guards were bugged and not responding, and it was awesome, everyone was shooting at everyone else. One bug i saw was that warriors couldnā€™t pvp and were left defenseless.

I rested only 1 hour lol. Yes i did everything and i also explored the ā€œwork in progressā€ zones (gg warriorā€™s skill). That was really amazing ^^

Haha, well it will be more fun when there is stuff in them!
